UNCASVILLE — Trailing by a point headed into the final quarter, No. 5 seed Marquette outscored St. John’s by 11 in the final period in a 57-47 Big East Tournament quarterfinal win on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Down 41-40 after three, the Golden Eagles went on a 17-6 run to close out the game and advance to a 3 p.m. semifinal meeting vs. top seed UConn on Sunday. The two teams split the season series with the Huskies winning at home, 61-48, on Dec. 31 and Marquette returning the favor in Milwaukee on Feb. 8, 59-52.
Chloe Marotta led Marquette on Saturday with a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds. Jordan King backed her up with 16 points and five assists and Liza Jarlen added 16 points.
Marquette coach Megan Duffy said although they came out on top Saturday, they’ll have to be stronger on Sunday.
“I thought the last time we played them we had some pretty good position defense, but it’s going to have to be five people defending, turning it up another notch,” she said. “Obviously with (Azzi) Fudd back, she gives them a different kind of outside threat as well. We’ll have to be better. We’ll figure it out tonight and early tomorrow and then go have fun and play.”
St. John’s was led by Mimi Reid’s 11 points, while Rayven Peeples added six points and 10 rebounds.
