MLB’s countdown of the Top 100 Players Right Now has been going on for a while now, and they’ve gotten into the Top 50. They release the names 10 at a time, and the 41-50 section has a couple familiar names.
Dodgers catcher Will Smith comes in at number 42 — interestingly, he’s one spot behind Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman, whom he was one spot ahead of in last month’s Top 10 Catchers Right Now list. Maybe it’s different ranking criteria, or maybe it’s because Smith played two more games at DH than Rutschman did. Whatever the reasons, number 42 is nothing to sneeze and a huge for Smith to finally start getting some of the recognition he so richly deserves.
Los Angeles pitcher Julio Urias comes in at number 50. He was at number 10 on the Top 10 Pitchers Right Now list, so his ranking here lines up pretty well. Urias has been one of the best pitchers in baseball the last two years, leading the majors with 20 wins in 2021 and leading the National League with a 2.16 ERA last year. Julio will be a free agent after the 2023 season, so he’s looking to have another big year before hitting the market.
LA figures to have at least a couple more players on this list. Clayton Kershaw came in at number 81, but he and the two newcomers are the only three Dodgers on the list so far. Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman are locks to make the list, and it will be interesting to see if there are any others.
