Playing his fifth FIFA World Cup, Lionel Messi finally scored his first ever World Cup knockout goal, helping Argentina register a 2-1 win over a stubborn Australia. Messi opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a brilliantly placed shot.

After the break, Julian Alvarez doubled the lead following a huge error from the Australian goalie. Towards the end, Australia pulled one goal back and gave their fancied hosts a mighty scare. Argentina, however, managed to hold on and take another step towards the World Cup glory.
